The Book
I was born and raised in New Jersey and have been riding a bike around these roads for most of my adult life. I love living and biking in this state even with all it faults. I wrote Road Biking New Jersey to show that New Jersey is a great place ride a bike. The book is available at your local book store or here on amazon.
Although it was a year of hard work, researching, mapping out and riding all the routes this book has been a lot of fun and has reaffirmed my belief that this state has a lot to offer bikers. I'm sure if you spend some time on the roads here you will agree.
This book is about bike riding, on the roads, in New Jersey and contains thirty-five great rides you can do. The rides in this book cover a variety of distances, terrain, locations, and traffic conditions. There are short rides (12 to 25 miles), medium rides (25 to 50 miles), long rides (50-plus miles), and even one marathon 232-mile ride. In the northwest you will find some challenging hilly rides; in the central and south you will find some rolling to flat rides. No matter what your ability or preference, you should be able to find a ride here that will fit your style.
The rides in this book were designed with the average recreational rider in mind-you don't need to be an elite athlete to complete any of them. With a little training and some miles, any healthy person should be able to enjoy these rides. The rides were also designed with touring in mind. Most rides overlap one or two other rides, so you can shorten or lengthen them to accommodate your ability and desired number of miles.
All the rides in the book are presented in a standard format. Each ride includes information about the length, terrain, and location of the starting point as well as a detailed turn by turn set of directions and a map. There is also a complete description of each ride that points our possible hazards and things to see along the way. With this information anybody should be able to follow these routes even if they are not familar with the area.
Here is the list of rides you will find in the book. Click on the ride name with links to see pictures from the ride:
